Guilty or Gilty?

Posted by Lidya Endzo Kun iLLa 0 comments
It's coming along ...
I’m continuing to add figures and new bits to my Clowne montage. These two medieval ones represent the trading cross’s past. I have been considering how I’ve positioned the man, he looks like he ought to be pulling something, perhaps leading a horse along, so watch this space.

Our leaflet folds into three, and has another side with more info and members
I have been editing the Art group’s leaflet for this year’s exhibition, and will print off more than last time, as they seem to go very quickly. I think it would be good for visitors to have the organiser’s contact details in case they want to join – we could perhaps do with one or two new members. The group didn’t want to have a stand at the Clowne Gala, as they didn’t think it would help to find new members. Other local interest groups use it like that (or to raise funds), but perhaps we are too specialised. Anyhow, we do welcome beginners, as well as more experienced people, and if anyone is interested, the first session is free.

We all have to bring a cake or two to sell to help cover the cost of hiring the room. I have been trying to find healthy options recipes (I’ve noticed how people like to enjoy themselves without feeling guilty), and have found some reduced calorie muffins on the BBC website, these sounded easy to make, though, and I can put some Easter decorations on them to make them prettier. Here’s a link to the recipe: http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/5225/orange-and-carrot-muffins. Usually we have beans on toast for lunch but this time, John is producing something particularly yummy for us all – he likes to take an English recipe and give it a Caribbean twist. I’ll report on it after the event.

Finally, I am going to produce some greetings cards from my artwork. If buying a painting is too extravagant for many people, they might go for a card instead – and perhaps frame it. A guilt free option – unless it’s a gilt frame, in which case they might feel “gilty” instead. Enough of my ramblings – more progress next week.

Genuine locals!

I’ve been busy completing paintings ready for our exhibition. Some of you may remember the montage of scenes from around Clowne I completed last year for the Derbyshire Open Art competition at Buxton. To liven it up a bit, I’ve now started to add figures to it, and these are genuine Clowne locals munching their chips (who look just like other UK residents, oddly enough). I also plan to add some medieval figures to some of the older landmarks in the painting.

One of our members had been ill and Maggie, who had been making cards from her artwork, donated one as a “get well” card for her, and we all signed it and sent it off. She has created some greetings cards featuring her paintings, using decoupage (layers), and also some with an edge made with a decorative cutter, producing a doily-like effect, all which will be on sale at the exhibition. Kevin had lightened up his moody Whitby seascape, but was leaving the sides of the canvas dark. John finally completed his pastel tiger, which has taken at least all this year so far, by adding the whiskers, “I hardly dare do this” he said. Karen was being given a “scumbling” lesson by Sue. Scumbling is painting thin layers of light colour over a dark colour to give a shimmering, broken colour effect - or at least that was the idea.

Last week, I was in Chesterfield for a meeting with two reporters from the Derbyshire Times. You may remember that I won a competition to have my blog featured from the newspaper’s web site. Ellen Beardmore and her colleague Ellie (who I think must have been Ellie Hunter) are trying to meet all their website bloggers - there are five others as well as me. They wanted to know more about me, and also whether there were any places, people or events in Clowne worth featuring. Although we only have 7,000 people here, there’s plenty to do if you scratch the surface, and I was not short of ideas. Ellen told me that, to help attract more readers, each of us bloggers will be featured in the paper on a revolving basis, with our latest blog post.  This is obviously good news for me.
Whilst I was there, I visited “Chocolate by Design”, a small high class shop in the town centre. They sell a range of chocolate novelties that you can’t find anywhere else – here are two of their Easter range, bought for the youngsters in the family. They also had large Easter eggs for adults, and smaller ones for the kids, some had sweets set into them – highly original. Here’s their website link: http://www.designchocolate.co.uk/

Baby dolls and birds' nests

Hello again readers,

This week, I have been adding to my montage painting of scenes of Clowne. Starting at the bottom, I have the Miners Welfare, in the middle the old infant and junior school, and to its right, the pit. At the top, there’s the Harlesthorpe dam, with the blue waters blending with the sky above the school, and to its left, the village cross – as it used to look before they cleaned it up, shoved it on a low plinth, and surrounded it with small bollards (some of which are quite a distance from the cross and get knocked down by traffic). As there is a space at the bottom left, I may add a pit pony. Horses are not my strong point, even though I used to ride them quite a lot when I was younger, so perhaps I will just stick to a disembodied pony head.

At art group, Elizabeth has now started a new painting, and brought the one she completed at last week’s meeting. I’ll photograph it and add it to our selling website soon. Unusually for her, she has, for added interest, put some figures into it. I asked her if any of them were her (especially the one in stilettos), or her friend John, but she thought not. Perhaps next time.

I seem to be making a habit of featuring other artists and this week, I would like to introduce the work of Teresa Russon. She makes incredibly realistic newborn dolls. Much too beautiful to play with, they are best seen as large ornaments rather than toys. Her Face Book profile is at: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000122872585, where you can see more examples of her work. She is also on My Space at: http://www.myspace.com/little_sweethearts. She lives at Hodthorpe, a small village near Worksop, Notts, and works from home. Teresa sometimes gets so engrossed in the process, she works late into the night to complete a doll. The dolls are made of acrylic, and have to be baked in the oven at various stages (I wonder if she puts some cakes or a pie in while she’s at it, to save electricity – or perhaps she’s on Economy 7). The basic facial features are the same on each one but she can make them to any weight, skin or hair colour, with eyes open or closed. She can make them as a girl or a boy - I don’t know if they are anatomically correct. They come fully dressed as a girl or boy anyway. Teresa also makes jewellery, and you can see some examples on the wrists of some of the dolls. I’m not sure whether it is suitable for young children, though.

I am not actually selling Teresa’s dolls, but she is happy to take orders and you can contact her via her Face Book or My Space pages by sending a message if you are a member – otherwise go to my website at www.artistsofderbyshire.co.uk, and send me a message via the contacts page, and I will happy to pass it on. Prices start at £150 (approx 216 USD) plus shipping.

On the arty wildlifey front, we have now completed our pond and planted a willow tree and some shrubs around it. The local birds love it and keep visiting to bathe and drink – the bird bath is old hat now. New on the scene are two magpies, smart looking birds with their black and white plumage, who raided one of the nests in the garden recently. I suppose that’s just nature, though. I hope to paint at least one of them soon - or would it be bad luck to just paint one?

More arty bits and bobs next week …
